PBS tyre report recommendations on the table

A review of tyre management practice in the Australian PBS system recommends a system based around the use of standard tyre characteristics for all PBS assessments.

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) had commissioned independent Road Safety Expert Dr John de Pont from Ternz Transport Research to look at simplifying the treatment of tyres under the PBS scheme.

HVIA Policy and Government Relations Manager Greg Forbes says that selecting the correct tyres for PBS vehicles has been a significant source of confusion for many in the industry.

“Dr de Pont suggests that all PBS assessments should use the data for Michelin XZA tyres which were used to establish the initial performance standards for the PBS scheme,” Mr Forbes said.

What to expect: HVIA State Committee meetings

HVIA has scheduled the next round of State Committee meetings commencing in February.

We will shortly be forwarding the Agenda for the meetings to Members.

The February round of meetings will include the latest information on the PBS tyre review, the Productivity Commission Report on National Transport Regulatory Reform, the draft tipper code and the ADR review process being undertaken by the Department of Infrastructure.

It will also include updates on various technical issues including brake certifications for ADR38/05, trailer wiring harnesses, tag trailers and couplings.

Member visit: Prestige Hino - Dandenong

Our team are always keen to drop by and get to know your business a bit better with a view to helping connect you with opportunities through our network, or to assist in resolving some of your challenges - particularly if its red tape related.

Our Southern Region Manager Neil "Richo" Richardson was in Dandenong las t week including a visit to Prestige Hino.

"In their workshop reception area they have this magnificent bird whose name is Bullet," Neil told us.

"I think it’s a great idea as it can be a very difficult area to work in with customer angst over bills, parts availability, downtime etc.

"The bird seems to put peoples' mood right," Neil said. "Anyway something you don’t see everyday!"

Give us a call or drop us a line if you would be keen on having a cup of tea(?) with one of our team at yours.

FWC rejects company’s redundancy reduction bid

A company that was able to repay one of its directors a $100,000 personal loan but argued it could not afford to pay two employees under $12,000 in redundancy entitlements has had its application thrown out by the Fair Work Commission.

The FWC heard the company was impacted in early 2019 by loss of work from a significant customer – at its peak representing 80 per cent of the business's work – and another contract.
